Edmonton’s CHBN, branded as The Bounce, is a contemporary hit radio station owned by Rogers. Sister stations in Edmonton include CHDI, branded as the Sonic, featuring a modern rock format, and CKER, branded as World FM, a multilingual station that complements OMNI, their multilingual television stations in Edmonton and Calgary. Calgary radio stations operated by Rogers include CFFR, an AM station broadcasting an all news format branded 660 News; CFAC, an AM station broadcasting sports branded as Sportsnet 960 or The Fan; CJAQ/96.9 FM, branded Jack FM with adult hit format and CHFM/99.3 FM branded Lite 95-9 with an adult contemporary format.
AT CFMG Edmonton (formerly EZ Rock now 104.9 Virgin Radio) morning co-hosts Seanna Collins and Ron Clark, mid-day host Kerry Campbell and afternoon drive host Jason Roberts have all left the station. Jason Roberts is now the morning show host at Rawlco’s Up! 99.3 FM (formerly Magic 99) replacing Jamie O’Connell and Dan Hunt. Speculations are that Rawlco hopes Roberts will draw former EZ Rock listeners who tended to be women and prefer the softer Up! sound. Replacing the Virgin Radio hosts are Pepper and Dylan, recently from Edmonton’s The Bounce and Calgary’s CJAY before that.
CIBK > Virgin Radio 98.5
Virgin Radio now owned by Montreal based Astral Media arrived in Alberta in June 2010 with the flip of CIBK in Calgary from Vibe 98.5 to Virgin Radio, a brand owned by British entrepreneur Richard Branson. In February 2011, CFMG in Edmonton followed suit when Astral flipped the station from EZ Rock to 104.9 Virgin Radio. Astral also operates Virgin Radio stations in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Stations carrying the Virgin Radio brand typically play rock or contemporary hit radio (CHR) with a lean towards rhythmic and dance tracks and operate independently with some shared programming under licences purchased from one of the 400 companies owned by Branson.
The Virgin Radio stations in Alberta describe their listeners as active, fashionable and early adopters of the latest trends and they describe their stations as ‘Fun and Sexy’.
