The News From HereThe Art Gallery of Alberta presents 36 established and emerging artists from nine Alberta communities in The News From Here: The 2013 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art. Guest-curated by Nancy Tousley, this exhibition explores the theme of post-regionalism in relation to art production in Alberta. The 2013 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art is one of the AGA’s most diverse exhibitions, featuring an extensive film, video and performance program, in addition to painting, sculpture and installation. The exhibit runs from January 26 – May 5, 2013. Curator’s Introduction on January 25 at 6:00pm.

Rogers Media Rebrands Citytv as it Expands its Reach in Alberta and Across Canada

CITY RogersContinuing the momentum of expanding its footprint in key Canadian markets , Rogers Media in rebranding their Citytv stations in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and Montreal  (with the launch of City Montreal on February 4, 2013) from Citytv to City. According to a statement, the network “has come to represent much more than just television,” and the new name, as well as a shortened logo, will reflect that. These stations offer intensely-local, urban-oriented, culturally-diverse television programming for its young professional, upwardly mobile, white collar viewers.  City Montreal will mark the third expansion for Rogers in the past year following the launch of City Saskatchewan and City programming in three key markets in Western Canada – Kamloops, Prince George, and Medicine Hat (CHAT) as a result of an affiliate agreement with Jim Pattison Broadcasting Group.

Alberta Animators Wendy Tilby and Amanda Fortis Nominated for 2012 Genie Awards

Genie Awards 2012Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis are an Alberta born animation duo. On January 24, 2012, they received their second Academy Award nomination, for the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) animated short film, Wild Life. In addition to writing and directing the film, Forbis and Tilby drew and painted every animation frame in guache, and wrote the lyrics for the film’s final song. They were only able to work on Wild Life part-time, due to commercial obligations, and the film is reported to have taken them from six to over seven years, from concept to completion. On March 8, 2012 they will find out if their herculean efforts on Wild Fire results in a 2012 Genie Award, Canada’s version of the Academy Awards.
