Edmonton’s Hired Gun Films Produces First in Documentary Film Series Featuring Bill Bourne

Bill Bourne on For the RecordFor the Record is a documentary film series produced by Edmonton filmmaker Ben Babchishin to document the creative process in singer/songwriters as they record new work. The series follows artists as they create organic world music, including folk, blues, reggae or any other genre of indigenous sound. The show is a hybrid, mixing elements of both documentary and reality tv and it’s being produced independently and primarily promoted and marketed online. Bill Bourne is the first singer/songwriter featured in the series. Below is a 5 minute trailer produced, written and directed by Ben Baby for Hired Gun Films, a cut from one of the tracks of his soon to be released album “free radio dance Band.”

Citytv Announces Addition of Local Programs in Calgary

Citytv announced the addition of two local programs to its schedule in Calgary and Toronto.  In Spring 2011, Citytv plans to broadcast a new half-hour suppertime program in Calgary and  CityNews will return to weekends on Citytv in Toronto.

Shaw Sports Channel Among Speciality Channel Applications

Shaw Media (owners of Shaw Cable, Global TV etc.) have applied to the CRTC to launch their own mainstream sports channel Shaw Media Sports. Shaw is just the latest media giant to apply to the CRTC for this since the CRTC rules that sports channels could now compete with the first (and for the longest time protected) mainstream sports channel, TSN.

Pattison Broadcast Group Announces 2011 Scholarship

The Jim Pattison Group has announced its third annual Alberta Equity Scholarship Competition worth $2000 to the winning student.The Alberta Equity Scholarship was instituted in 2009 to address the shortage of Alberta broadcasters from four under-represented groups; Aboriginal Peoples, Persons with Disabilities, Members of Visible Minorities, and Women.

Edmonton Millwoods Elementary School Produces Live News Show

A Mill Woods school has produced Edmonton’s youngest news crew. Every morning at Minchau elementary school, students produce a 10-minute news show that streams live on Smart Boards in every classroom. Minchau Television — or MTV as they call it — is run entirely by students, and includes a sports reporter, a weatherman, station managers, and technical staff.

Golden West Radio acquired CFIT, The Range 106.1 FM an adult contemporary radio station from Tiessen Media in January 2011 bringing its total number of stations in Western Canada to 37.
