fresh start CalgaryOne of Canada’s foremost addiction treatment centres celebrates its 20 year anniversary November 9th. Since 1992, Calgary’s Fresh Start Recovery Centre has been “Providing Solutions That Recover Lives”. This year marked the opening of their new home, a 50-bed, 38,000 square foot facility in the central NE Calgary neighborhood of Greenview. “It’s a long way from their humble beginnings 20 years ago in Midnapore”, says Executive Director Mr. Stacey Petersen.  “As more people have become aware of the problems of addiction and homelessness in Calgary, organizations like Fresh Start are playing a more important and prominent role in the community,” Petersen says. “We’ve certainly achieved a degree of awareness as a valuable community resource. That’s allowed us to enjoy the support of many friends from all levels of society, and that in turn has allowed us to help a lot of people.”

Red Deer Couple Help Raise $950,000 for Amateur Hockey Clubs in North America

Hockey SpiritMore than 750 hockey clubs across North America have raised over $950,000 through the sale of Hockey Spirit Fundraising Calendars, a unique fundraising program conceived in 2005 by Brian and Elizabeth Urlacher of Red Deer, Alberta.  By the end of the 2012-2013 hockey season, this total is expected to reach $1.25 million. Brian and Elizabeth Urlacher  created the Hockey Spirit Fundraising Program in 2005 to make it easier for local hockey clubs to raise funds to offset the cost of equipment, rink rentals, transportation and tournament fees.

Music Conference Alberta in Red Deer, November 1 – 3, 2012

Music Conference AlbertaMusic Conference Alberta is Alberta’s premiere conference for music educators. The conference includes sessions designed for elementary music teachers, choral conductors, band directors, studio instructors, and church musicians. MCA is a proud collaboration between the Alberta Band Association, Alberta Choral Federation, Alberta Music Education Foundation, Alberta Kodály Association, Alberta Guild of English Handbell Ringers, Alberta String Association, and Concordia Music and Worship Symposium. Music Conference Alberta provides an opportunity for musicians and music educators from across the province to attend workshop sessions, concerts, master classes, and social events. The conference is host to a large trade fair which includes upwards of 40 exhibitors annually. MCA concludes with the Awards Banquet at which Alberta’s exceptional music educators are honoured.

St John Ambulance Celebrates New State of the Art Facility in Calgary on September 22, 2012

St John Ambulance CalgaryThe potential for thousands and thousands more Calgarians to learn to save lives has increased dramatically with the Opening of St John Ambulance’s new facility at 7236-10 St NE, Calgary. The Grand Opening ceremony took place on  Saturday, Sept 22, 2012. The newly renovated building has eight 1,500 sq ft classrooms fitted with multimedia presentation capabilities, two student common areas, one on each floor with WiFi capability, a 10,000 sq ft warehouse with indoor vehicle bays for the Mobile First Aid Posts, a large boardroom, and plans are in the works for a contiguous museum throughout the new building which will display St John archives and current items of interest.
