These after-midnight listeners were frustrated with the over-abundance of BBC talk shows and the dearth of the music programs CKUA has been known for during the past 90 years.“Necessity became the mother of invention,” quipped David. “When there’s an audience concern but no money to deal with that concern, it’s time to get creative.”

Blackgold Broadcasting Awarded Licence for New Radio Station in Stony Plain

The One Radio 88.1 FMOn September 15, 2014, the CRTC approved the application by Blackgold Broadcasting to operate a new English language station to serve The Town of Stony Plain, the City of Spruce Grove and Parkland County, Alberta. The new station, CKSS | 88.1 FM | The One: “Parkland’s Best Country” promises to provide local news, sports and weather and other community information.

Calgary’s AMP Radio | 90.3 FM is Canada’s First QuickHitz Station Playing Twice the Music

CKMP radio CalgaryOn August 1, Calgary’s AMP radio at 90.3 FM swapped its conventional Top 40 format for the new QuickHitz format and a new slogan: “Twice the Music.” With the new format, Top 40 songs are edited to run around two minutes instead of the more typical three or four minutes thus delivering “twice the music in half the time.” AMP now plays 24 songs per hour instead of the normal 12 it used to play.

Jim Pattison Broadcast GroupIn April 2014, Pattison launched Calgary’s newest radio station. In June they announced the top 12 winners of Alberta’s (and one of Canada’s) most lucrative talent contest with awards of $102,700 to a grand-prize winner, $75,000 to second place and $50,000 to third. In July they announced the purchase of nine radio stations in Alberta and Saskatchewan, two of them located in Edmonton: 102.9 FM NOW! Radio, and UP! 99.3 FM.
