J-SourceJournalism in Canada is evolving and J-Source, produced by a collaboration of post-secondary journalism schools and programs led by Ryerson University, Université Laval and Carleton University and published out of Ottawa, wants to promote national discussion about that evolution, as well as provide a source for news, research, commentary, advice and resources for industry professionals, scholars, students and anyone interested in journalism in Canada.

Pattison Broadcast Group Rebrands The Peak 93.5 FM from Classic Rock to Wild 95.3 FM Calgary’s New Country Station

Wild 93.5 FMAt 10:15 AM today, Jim Pattison Broadcast Group announced the rebranding of 95.3 FM The Peak playing classic rock to Wild FM playing hot country music.  The media release announcing the rebranding issued today promises that the new country station will be youthful, fun, driven by energy and be plugged in to today’s young woman and man. They plan on actively engaging listeners on the air, on social platforms, on their website.

CRTC Receives 12 Applications for Radio Stations Serving Urban Indigenous Communities

Indigenous RadioThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today announced that it has received 12 applications to operate radio stations serving urban Indigenous Canadians in major markets. Radio for First Nations in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa could complement existing Aboriginal services. Specifically, the CRTC has received two applications for stations in Vancouver, three for Calgary, three for Edmonton, two for Toronto and two for Ottawa.

CJSW Launches New Project Aiming to Document Calgary’s Rich Musical History

Calgary-musicCampus radio station CJSW 90.9 FM recently announced their Calgary Local Music Library project, which aims to compile an aural and visual history of Calgary music. The traveling installation will tour around Calgary Public Library branches. CJSW is searching for donations of CDs, posters, photographs and other paraphernalia from the local music community for the project. The installation is funded through a $30,000 Calgary Foundation grant to CJSW and the Calgary Public Library.

660 News, Calgary’s Small But No Less Mighty All News Radio Station

CFFRCFFR broadcasting on the AM dial at 660 AM in Calgary is owned by Rogers Media. Although at its launch on January 10, 1984, it broadcast an “Oldies” format, as of April 3, 2006 to the present, it broadcasts an all-news format, branded 660News. The re-branding is similar to that used by Rogers all-news or news-talk stations in Toronto (680News), Vancouver (News1130), and Ottawa (1310News).  660 News is one of two all-news stations in Calgary, the other, CHQR 770 AM operated by Corus (not including CBC Radio One).
