Postmedia to Acquire Quebecor’s 175 Sun Media English Titles for $316 Million

n_calgarysunPostmedia has announced it has entered into a partnership with Quebecor Media to acquire the company’s 175 Sun Media English titles. The involved titles include the Toronto Sun, Ottawa Sun, Winnipeg Sun, Calgary Sun and Edmonton Sun as well as the London Free Press and free 24 Hours dailies in Toronto and Vancouver. The deal also includes digital properties such as the Canoe portal outside of Quebec, as well as QMI’s Islington printing plant in Ontario and 35 real estate properties in Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba.

2013 National Newspaper Award Winning Photos by Photographers at Daily Newspapers in Alberta

photographerOn May 30, 2014, the 65th annual National Newspaper Awards were handed out in Toronto. While not surprisingly, the large urban dailies and the two national dailies took the bulk of the awards, photographers at the Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal took the bulk of the photo awards: Feature Photo (Leah Hennel), News Photo (Shaughn Butt), and Sports Photo (Amber Bracken).

Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association Announces 2013 Better Newspaper Competition Award Winners

AWNA AwardsOn June 12, 2014, during its 94th annual convention, the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association announced the winners of the 2013 BNC Awards of Excellence winners. This annual competition, judged by publishers from outside of Alberta, honours general excellence in Alberta weekly newspaper publishing. Six different award categories are based on size of community, from under 1299 up to 12,500 and over.

Metro Dailies Now Offer App to Access Augmented Reality Elements of their Newspapers Across Canada

Metro Newspaper CanadaStar Media Group-owned Metro is adding augmented reality elements to its editorial pages across Canada as of April 2, 2014.  Robyn Payne, director of marketing and research, Metro English Canada, tells MiC [Media in Canada] that the goal of adding augmented reality to the daily’s print pages is to bridge the gap between the paper and digital copies of the title. Users wishing to access augmented reality pieces of Metro will need to have the paper’s app, but won’t need other third-party apps like Layar to view the additional content.
