Culinaire MagazineCalgary has a new food and beverage magazine called Culinaire: Calgary’s Freshest Food & Beverage Magazine. They plan to publish 10 issues a year with each issue focused on a single main ingredient. Their first issue launched in May with the theme of Meat & Game and articles such as why Calgary is a prime destination for meat lovers and reviews of bold beers and beefy wines. The theme of the June issue is pasta, rice, grains and legumes, the July/August issue on seafood and their latest issue, September 2012 issue features a harvest theme with a special focus on locally grown fruits and vegetables. The wine section features wines that taste like fruit as well as fruity beers, ciders, and spirits made from grapes, along with cocktail recipes for South America’s most famous grape-based spirit, Pisco.

YouThinkIT Publications Seeks Program Manager for Journalism Workshops in Calgary Schools

YouThinkIT Publications YouthInkIT is a not-for-profit literacy organization that is dedicated to advancing and encouraging literacy in youth through journalism and communications. Through signature journalism workshops, offered to grades 3 through 7, YouthInkIT works with students to teach them critical skills in research, interview techniques and writing. Our journalism workshops include the participation of volunteer experts from the community who participate in the program and the completion of a YouthInkIT workshop includes a hard copy YouthInkIT Minizine that each participant and volunteer receives.

Alberta Magazine > Eighteen Bridges Magazine edited by Curtis Gillespie and Lynn Coady

Eighteen Bridges Magazine - EdmontonEighteen Bridges: Canadian Creative Journalism Magazine is published twice a year by the Canadian Literature Centre at the University of Alberta and edited by Curtis Gillespie and Lynn Coady. It has well-earned rave reviews for its first four issues. This year, the first year it was eligible for magazine awards, it was nominated for 10 National Magazine Awards and 14 Western Magazine Awards. At the Gala for the National Magazine Awards on June 5, it won in the Arts and Entertainment Category for Don Gillmor’s article “All In.” The article, also nominated in Personal Journalism, examines the great career of the late Paul Quarrington, a 5-time National Magazine Award winner. On June 15, at the Western Magazine Awards, Eighteen Bridges walked away with awards in the Arts and Entertainment category — also for Gillmor’s article — received a Gold Award for Chris Turner’s article “Bearing Witness” and was celebrated as the Best New Magazine of the Year in Western Canada.

Alberta Magazines Nominated for 2011 National Magazine Awards

National Magazine Awards, Alberta nomineesThe National Magazine Awards Foundation has released their 2011 shortlist of 362 nominees in 45 categories from 81 different Canadian magazines. Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awards will be announced at the 35th National Magazine Awards on June 7 in Toronto. Alberta based nominees include: Eighteen Bridges (recipient of an Alberta Magazine Award for Best New Magazine) with an impressive ten nominations and Omar Mouallem’s “Under the Veil,” recent winner of our Best Alberta Story award. AlbertaViews and Swerve are also strong contenders, for awards in categories ranging from Essays and Investigative Reporting to Humour and Society. A new Alberta-based magazine, Uppercase, received a nomination for Art Direction for an Entire Issue.

Alberta Finalists of 2012 Western Magazine Awards, Winners to be Announced June 15, 2012

Western Magazine Awards 2012The Western Magazine Awards, celebrating their 30th year with 30 awards, have released a list of finalists and the Alberta talent certainly does shine. Shortlisted for the Alberta/NWT Gold Award Best Article is David Ebner’s “Oil Sands For Sale” in Alberta Views; Chris Turner’s “Bearing Witness”, Omar Mouallem’s “Under the Veil”, and Tim Bowling’s “On the Rails” in Eighteen Bridges; and Jeremy Klaszus’ “For the Love of God” in Swerve.  The Alberta/NWT Magazine of the Year are nominess are Alberta Venture, celebrating their 15th year; Eighteen Bridges, 2011 recipient of the Alberta Magazine Award for Best New Magazine; and Swerve, the most recent addition to the AMPA member family. Three of the four magazines up for Best New Magazine are also Alberta-based publications: Eighteen Bridges, HERS and Leap.
