Alberta Media Personality: Andrew Nikiforuk and the Politics of Oil

NikiforukCalgary based award winning journalist, Andrew Nikiforuk has been writing about the oil and gas industry for nearly 20 years and cares deeply about accuracy, government accountability, and cumulative impacts. He has won seven National Magazine Awards for his journalism since 1989 and top honours for investigative writing from the Association of Canadian Journalists. he has published several books focused on the politics of oil. The dramatic, Alberta-based Saboteurs: Wiebo Ludwig’s War Against Big Oil, won the Governor General’s Award for Non-Fiction in 2002.

Alberta Media Personality: Todd Cherniawsky, Filmmaker, Art Director, Digital Artist

Todd CherniawskyBorn in Edmonton and raised on an acreage just outside of Ardrossan, Todd attended NAIT (Architecture ‘88) and the U of A (BFA –  Art & Design ‘93). FAVA was introduced into his daily schedule in ’89, and after serving as Production Designer on several shorts including SIMON SEZZ, SENESCENSE, and ALLNIGHT BEETLES, looked for options to study art direction formally. Moving to Los Angeles to attend the AFI, Cherniawsky found a solid program focused on the craft, headed by Robert Boyle, one of Hitchcock’s production designers. Richard Sylbert, Harold Michaelson, and Henry Bumstead, were amongst the other mentors at the school that passed on their wisdom and knowledge of the craft.

Alberta media personality: Fish Griwkowsky, Visual Arts Columnist, Edmonton Journal

Fish-GriwkowskyFish Griwkowsky is an award-winning journalist, writer, illustrator and filmmaker based in Edmonton. He’s shot and directed numerous videos for bands including Twin Fangs, Wet Secrets and two for Corb Lund – including the lead-off video Gettin’ Down on the Mountain for the country singer’s No. 1-in-Canada album, Cabin Fever. He also photographed the album’s imagery. Working with director Trevor Anderson, Fish filmed short doc The High Level Bridge on a $100 Sony webcam, which went on to Sundance, Cannes, Brooklyn Rooftop Film Fest, sxsw, Dawson City Film Festival and won an honourable mention at AFI in Hollywood. Werner Herzog called it, “Very accomplished filmmaking,” while Matt Groening said of it, “It’s great!”

Bridget Ryan, City TV EdmontonAccording to her website, Bridget Ryan is an actor, singer, playwright, director and television host in Edmonton. Her talent is both inherited and earned. She’s the daughter of Tim Ryan, the founder of the MacEwan Theatre Arts Progam and Maralyn Ryan, actor, director and arts educator. Bridget graduated from MacEwan Theatre Arts program in 1993 and then went on to graduate from University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music in 1996 with a BFA in Musical Theatre. Upon completion, she moved to New York City, debuting at Don’t Tell Mama’s with RANT CONTROL (to which she garnered ‘Most Promising New Talent’ /Strawhat Awards). Bridget has performed all over Canada (Sudbury Theatre Centre, Citadel Theatre, Vertigo Theatre, and Workshop West) and has worked with some fantastic directors (Jim Guedo, Bob Baker, Ron Jenkins, Tim Ryan, and Jim Brewer.
