Every weekday morning beginning this Monday at 7:40 a.m., The Paul Brown Show will announce a clue as to the possible contents of The Bear’s Box.

Calgary’s AMP Radio | 90.3 FM is Canada’s First QuickHitz Station Playing Twice the Music

CKMP radio CalgaryOn August 1, Calgary’s AMP radio at 90.3 FM swapped its conventional Top 40 format for the new QuickHitz format and a new slogan: “Twice the Music.” With the new format, Top 40 songs are edited to run around two minutes instead of the more typical three or four minutes thus delivering “twice the music in half the time.” AMP now plays 24 songs per hour instead of the normal 12 it used to play.

CBC-EdmontonOn July 24, CBC announced massive staff cuts, roughly 20% of its current complement of 7,500 employees, as it shifts from broadcasting to a mobile-first strategy. The cuts are in addition to the announcement in April that 657 jobs would be eliminated over the next two years. President/CEO Hubert Lacroix calls it a “culture shift”— turning the public broadcaster into a less expensive multi-platform player.

Shaw Communications Proposes to Launch National TV News Channel: Global News 1

shawtvIn filings to the CRTC at the end of June, Calgary-based Shaw Communications, which operates Global Television, claims it wants to launch a “hybrid local/national” English-language national news channel. Shaw’s submission included a brief outline of the plans as part of the CRTC’s formal consultation on the evolution of the Canadian broadcasting system. Shaw’s news channel proposal falls under “Category C” guidelines, which covers all-news channels like the CBC News Network, CTV News Channel, RDI and the Sun News Network.

Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Makes a Big Move on the Alberta Music Scene

Jim Pattison Broadcast GroupIn April 2014, Pattison launched Calgary’s newest radio station. In June they announced the top 12 winners of Alberta’s (and one of Canada’s) most lucrative talent contest with awards of $102,700 to a grand-prize winner, $75,000 to second place and $50,000 to third. In July they announced the purchase of nine radio stations in Alberta and Saskatchewan, two of them located in Edmonton: 102.9 FM NOW! Radio, and UP! 99.3 FM.
