This announcement follows the expansion of their Sunday TV newscast to 30 minutes beginning Sunday, September 1st.

CKMX Radio in Calgary Flips from Country to Comedy with Funny 1060

CKMX Radio CalgaryOn September 12, 2013, Calgary’s CKMX flipped from classic country to an all-comedy format as Funny 1060 to feature stand up comedy bits performed by major stand-up and improvisational comedians. Launched to coincide with the Calgary Comedy Festival,  the station is one of several Bell-owned stations to air programming from the 24/7 Comedy.

CBC Cancels Calgary Auditions for Recipe to Riches and Accepts Online Submissions until July 10

Recipe to RichesOn June 21, 2013, CBC posted this news release: “Due to extreme flooding in Calgary and the surrounding area, CBC’s new series RECIPE TO RICHES will be cancelling its Calgary open call on June 22, at the Real Canadian Superstore, location at 20 Heritage Meadows Way SE, Calgary, AB. CBC and its RECIPE TO RICHES partners, Loblaw Companies Limited and Temple Street Productions would like to express their sincere concern for all individuals affected by the recent flooding; our thoughts are with the people of Calgary and its surrounding areas during this difficult time. CRTC Approves Bell’s Takeover of Astral Media

Bell MediaToday, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved an application by Astral Media Inc. to sell its pay and specialty television channels, conventional television stations and radio stations to BCE Inc. The CRTC’s approval comes with a number of conditions that are necessary to uphold the public interest. “Astral’s application put forward a different approach and responded to many of our concerns” said Jean-Pierre Blais, Chairman of the CRTC.

Jim Pattison Broadcast Group to Purchase Calgary’s Kool FM (CKCE) from Bell Media

Kool FM CalgaryOn May 16, Jim Pattison Broadcast Group announced their acquisition of three key FM radio stations located in Calgary and Winnipeg. Subject to CRTC approvals, Pattison will purchase two Bell Media stations and one Astral station. In Calgary, they purchased KooL FM 101.5 (CKCE-FM) a hot adult contemporary format from Bell Media. In Winnipeg, they purchased FAB 94.3 (CHIQ-FM) a classic pop format and QX 104 (CFQX-FM), a country format. Rick Arnish, Chairman of Jim Pattison Broadcast Group stated, “This is a very important acquisition for our Broadcast Group and, with the approval of this transaction from the CRTC, we will expand our presence in the major markets of Calgary and Winnipeg, which we have been focusing on for some time.”
