Rogers Communications Sets Up Shop in Alberta at Rogers Place in Downtown Edmonton

Rogers Place EdmontonAt a media conference in Edmonton today, the Edmonton Oilers, Rexall Sports Corporation and Rogers Communications announced Rogers’ purchase of naming rights for the future home of the Edmonton Oilers. The new arena, set to open in 2016, will be called Rogers Place. This announcement follows on the heels of other significant announcements Rogers made this year.

The Rural Channel: “Canada’s Country View” Now Available on Cable & Satellite

Rural TVThe Rural Channel, a new specialty channel devoted to rural and agricultural lifestyle and news programming launched this summer by Saskatchewan based, Ag-Com Productions. Ag-Com has been producing rural focused programming for other channels since 1983 and received a greenlight from the CRTC to launch the channel in August, 2008.

Alberta Writers Win Giller Awards Canada’s Richest Literary Prize Two Years in a Row

Lynn CoadyEdmonton’s Lynn Coady was awarded the $50,000 Scotiabank Giller Prize on Tuesday, November 5 for her short story collection Hellgoing, saying that the award announcement was so “shocking and overwhelming” that in order to make her acceptance speech she had to “keep it together just to read from this page so I’m going to hold on to these pages for dear life.”

Western Catholic Reporter to Change Publishing Frequency & Launch Subscription Service

Western-Catholic-ReporterThe Western Catholic Reporter announced it will undergo the most extensive changes in its nearly 50-year history in January, 2014. The WCR will change from a weekly to a biweekly newspaper, publishing 24 issues a year, instead of the current 44, will require readers to pay a $30-a-year subscription fee in order to receive the newspaper and create a stronger online presence with new website and social media initiatives. The newspaper is not going away; people will still be able to receive it if they purchase a subscription.
