Golden West Broadcasting Applies to the CRTC for Fort Saskatchewan Radio Station Licence

Golden West BroadcastingGolden West Broadcasting, a Manitoba-based company expects to be broadcasting from a Fort Saskatchewan radio station in about a year if all goes well at a federal government hearing this past September.  “While Fort Saskatchewan is part of the metro Edmonton area it is its own community,” said Lyndon Friesen, president of Golden West Radio. “We think it makes great sense to operate a local radio station that focuses on the news and information specific to residents of Fort Saskatchewan.” Golden West Radio, of Alton, MB, appeared before the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on Sept. 16 for a hearing into its application to operate an 11,000-watt commercial radio station on the 107.9 FM frequency. Friesen said Golden West specializes in operating in small communities. The company’s 38 radio stations are located mainly in the prairie provinces.

Media Moves in Alberta Reported to Me and by Others

Media MovesErinne Sevigny, long standing Managing Editor and President of Other Voices Edmonton’s Literary Magazine has officially stepped down and passed on all of her duties. I know this because Erinne and I are taking the same creative non-fiction writing workshop  at MacEwan’s Writing Works program led by Kathy MacLean.  It turns out that Kath, as she seems to preferred to be called, teaches creative writing, in the midst of publisher her next creative non fiction publication, prefers poety and is currently Writer in Residence for the Canadian Authors Association (Edmonton Branch) and has an office at Audrey’s Books.  According to the Other Voices website, Marcia, their new President, has past experience working with not for profit organizations as well as previous board and grant-writing experience and has been volunteering with Other Voices in the reading collectives and as their grant-writer for the past year.  Seems like the publication is in good hands.

Lone Pine Publishing Acquires Company’s Coming Cookbooks in Edmonton

lone-pine-publishing AlbertaThe big news in the media landscape in Alberta this month is the acquisition of Company’s Coming by Lone Pine Publishing, both of Edmonton. Sources tell me the purchase took place in November 2010 but was not officially announced until February 2011 and in May, the Lone Pine Publishing offices moved to the Company’s Coming offices at 2311 – 96 Street, between the Whitemud Freeway and Anthony Henday Drive. Company’s Coming has been publishing cookbooks in Edmonton for 25 years. They are now up to 100 books and published around the world. I am sure that many people in Alberta have at least one of these Company’s Coming cookbooks in their library.

Media Moves at Edmonton Radio & TV Stations According to Marty

Media Moves at TV and Radio Stations in EdmontonA tip of the hat to Marty Forbes from the Edmonton Sun for reporting in his May 16, 2011 column that Corey Klimm and Ami Amato have left Now FM in Edmonton for the Z95 in Toronto, that Al Ford has added programming to his operations manager position for Rogers as well as the programming of SONIC. No wonder he scooped up the Program Director of the Year this spring at Canadian Music Week. He made sure the odds were in his favour! Marty also answered a question asked by many: what happened to Seanna Collins and Ron Clark? He reported that Seanna is still freelancing, doing the Save-On-Foods commercials and pitch hitting on the Lorraine Mansbridge Show on Global Edmonton while Ron Clark is busy running his new contracting and landscaping business. Over at CTV Edmonton he notes that Carrie Doll is due back in June from her mat leave just in time for Erin Isfeld for hers (how’s that for job sharing?). Sharing the parenting duties is Joel Gotlib on paternity leave for baby number two. What’s in the water at CTV Edmonton?
