Alberta Campus Newspapers The Gauntlet and The Gateway Win “Johnnie” Awards by the Canadian University Press

CUP-AwardsWinners were announced for the John H. McDonald (the “Johnnies) awards celebrating excellence in student journalism at campus newspapers across Canada in Toronto on January 9, 2016. The annual awards, administered by the Canadian University Press, are open to any students whose work has been published in a CUP student publication at post-secondary institutions in Canada. The University of Calgary and the University of Alberta student newspapers were singled out.

The National Magazine Awards Announces New Digital Publishing Award for Canadian Digital Publishers

CBC Edmonton Wins Four National Investigative Awards from the Canadian Association of Journalists

CBC NewsCBC Investigates, the investigative unit of CBC Edmonton, has won four national awards for “Aura of Power,” the series of stories which exposed the personal and political misuse of public resources by former Alberta premier Alison Redford. The investigative unit – with reporters Charles Rusnell and Jennie Russell – won the Don McGillivray award for best overall investigative story from the Canadian Association of Journalists at its annual conference on June 6 after earlier winning in the community broadcast category.

Red Deer Filmmaker Wins Big Rock Eddie Short Film Award and $10,000 for Documentary, An Alberta Farm

Alberta-FarmAn Alberta Farm, a short documentary by Red Deer’s Brendan O’Brien, won the $10,000 top prize at the Big Rock Eddies Short Film Festival at the Theatre Junction Grand in Calgary on June 6. This year for the first time in its 22 history, Big Rock opened up the theme beyond beer commercials to the idea of “tradition.” From this idea, O’Brien developed the story. The five-minute film, centres on the changing farm life and the memories of Alberta dairy farmer Bruce Bell.

Alberta Magazines Nominated for National Magazine Awards

National-MagazinesThe National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) has announced the finalists of their 38th annual awards program, including 16 entries from AMPA-member magazines shortlisted in written and visual categories, as well as a finalist placement for the coveted Magazine of the Year for Calgary-based UPPERCASE magazine. Western Living is among the top-nominated magazines with 6 nominations and New Trail Magazine with 5 nominations. Avenue Edmonton, Glass Buffalo and Swerve are also nominated.
