Steven Owad Awarded 2011 Alberta Screenwriters Initiative Award

Calgary based screenwriter and author of the screenplay Sons of the Fathers, Steven Owad is the recipient of this year’s Alberta Screenwriters Initiative. Second and third finalists for the award are Aaron Langvand for Woman of Mars, and Jason McCulloch for It’s Been Almost. Now in its fifth year, the Alberta Screenwriters Initiative is presented as a joint partnership between the Writers Guild of Alberta (WGA) and the Alberta Association of Motion Picture and Television Unions (AAMPTU). The initiative is supported by proceeds from past Annual Film and Television Industry Wrap Parties.

Edmontonian Jordon Camponi Wins Grand Prize in Canada’s Capital Photo Contest

Canadas Capitals Photo ContestAn Edmontonian is the grand-prize winner in a national contest for a photo showing the breakup of the ice on the North Saskatchewan River and the skyline of Edmonton as a backdrop. Jordan Camponi won top spot in the Canada’s Capitals photo contest held by Canadian Geographic and the National Capital Commission. “The picture pretty much sums up what Edmontonians look forward to all year,” said Camponi. “The long-awaited thaw of the North Saskatchewan River means that summer is on its way and we will soon get to enjoy the festivals that are the best part of living in Edmonton.” Camponi shot the award-winning picture for Canada’s Capitals contest while taking photos at his cousin’s wedding in April 2010.  After finishing pictures of the bridal party at Louise McKinney Park, Camponi stopped on the Cloverdale pedestrian bridge to snap a few shots of the river. A photo of the Alberta Legislature taken by Edmontonian Julia Coombs was selected as one of the runners up in the contest.

Alberta Film & Television Award Winners Announced on May 28, 2011

Awards, celebrating excellence and outstanding achievement in Albertan film, television and new media, were handed out on May 28, 2011 at a sold-out  gala celebration held at the Marriott at River Cree Resort in Edmonton. The evening was hosted by comedian Steve Patterson. The statuette, known as the ‘Rosie’, was awarded in 22 Class and 29 Craft categories. This year the production taking the most number of Rosies – 5 – was the television series “Heartland,” produced by SEVEN/24 Films, including Best Dramatic Series and Best Actor (Edmonton’s Shaun Johnston). The Calgary-based company, co-led the pack as the production company receiving the most Rosies (6), tied with Edmonton based Clearwater Documentary, which also won 6 awards between two of its productions, “Code Breakers” and “Tipping Point.”

37th Annual Alberta Film “Rosie” Awards | Edmonton | May 28, 2011

This year, Alberta productions, from commercials, new media, and both long and short form fiction and non-fiction are competing for 22 Class awards to be handed out on May 28 at the River Cree in Edmonton.  In addition, Alberta’s talented screenwriters, costume and production designers, cinematographers, editors, directors, make-up artists, special effects artists, sound technicians and composers are competing in 29 Craft categories. Each winner receives the prestigious Rosie Award, which this year is sporting a brand new look.
