Alberta Magazine Awards 2012The Alberta Magazine Awards has announced the finalists for their annual awards to be presented at the Alberta Magazine Excellence Gala, on Thursday March 22 at the Carriage House Inn in Calgary, as a celebration of the Alberta magazine industry. The awards run in conjunction with the annual Alberta Magazines Conference this year from March 22 – 24, 2012 in Calgary. Congratulations to all of the finalists and nominees!

National Newspaper Award Nominees – Winners to be Announced April 27, 2012

National Newspaper Awards CanadaPostmedia Network journalists have received eight nominations for this year’s National Newspaper Awards – the 63rd annual hat tip to Canada’s best journalists. Postmedia News and the Edmonton Journal each received two nominations for stories published in 2011, the awards organization announced Thursday. Postmedia reporters have picked up eight National Newspaper Award nominations. The National Newspaper Awards are among the most prestigious honours print journalists can receive in Canada. Last year, Postmedia writers picked up four prizes. Sheila Pratt from the Edmonton Journal was recognized for her investigation of the climate of fear and intimidation in Alberta’s public life. The Journal was also nominated in the breaking news category for the team’s coverage of the fires that devastated Slave Lake, Alta., last year, destroying a third of the community.

Alberta Animators Wendy Tilby and Amanda Fortis Nominated for 2012 Genie Awards

Genie Awards 2012Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis are an Alberta born animation duo. On January 24, 2012, they received their second Academy Award nomination, for the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) animated short film, Wild Life. In addition to writing and directing the film, Forbis and Tilby drew and painted every animation frame in guache, and wrote the lyrics for the film’s final song. They were only able to work on Wild Life part-time, due to commercial obligations, and the film is reported to have taken them from six to over seven years, from concept to completion. On March 8, 2012 they will find out if their herculean efforts on Wild Fire results in a 2012 Genie Award, Canada’s version of the Academy Awards.

Western Magazine Awards Invites Submissions Until March 16, 2012

Western Magazine AwardsThe Western Magazine Awards Foundation (WMAF) honours and celebrates editorial excellence in Western Canadian magazine writing, photography, illustration and art direction. This is accomplished through an annual awards competition, a gala event where winners are announced and recognized with cash prizes, and The Magazine School, an educational program featuring WMA-winning work. The 30th Annual WMAs close on March 16, 2012.

Christopher Plummer Does Canada Proud at the Academy Awards

Christopher PlummerIn today’s Toronto Star, Richard Ouzounian reported that “Ohristopher Plummer, when asked the first thing that went through his mind when his name was announced as the winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar Sunday, didn’t hesitate with his answer. “I winked at Rooney Mara, who was sitting beside me,” he said, speaking of his co-star from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. “She was so supportive of me in all the pre-show publicity that I had to thank her. And I also adore her.” After that came more practical concerns. “Is my fly open? Should I button my dinner jacket?” All of this whizzed through his mind in a few seconds and that includes the change in mental attitude when he found out he had won. You have to be prepared to lose. . . . You steel yourself for that. But once you’ve found out you won, you empty your mind for a second, then as you start walking up the stairs, you form your opening sentence.”
