Shaping a Cultural Legacy — Alberta Literary Award Winners for 2012

Alberta Literary Awards 2012In an emotion-filled evening, the Book Publishers Association of Alberta and the Writers Guild of Alberta honoured the province’s literati at the 2012 Alberta Book Awards Gala, held at Calgary’s trendy Hotel Arts on June 9, 2012, in conjunction with the Writers Guild of Alberta’s 2012 conference, “The Adventure of the Process.” Over 200 individuals attended the gala, at which 20 awards were handed out to authors and publishers.  I was in the midst of moving my home/office at the time so alas could not attend the awards myself. However, Cynthia Dusseault, who recently took over the job of putting together the media personalities profiles for mediamag blog our enewsletter mediamag ezine, agreed to provide a write-up on her experience at the awards. Digital Alberta Announces Digital Alberta Award Finalists for 2012

Digital Alberta Awards 2012Digital Alberta recently announced the 2012 finalists for the annual Digital Alberta Awards. The finalists were selected from a pool of over 90 excellent nominees in 16 categories spanning from Best Digital Startup, to Best Animation and Special Effects, to Best Digital Philanthropy Innovation. Corus’s Calgary radio station Country 105/CKRY is a finalist in the Mobile Entertainment Category for it 30th Anniversary iPhone app. The awards program is designed to recognize leaders in innovation, creativity and the evolving digital media sector in Alberta.  The ceremony will take place at Hotel Arts in Calgary on Monday June 4th, 2012 from 5:30-11pm. Cocktails & H’ors Doeuvres will be served and the attire is Business Formal! See the list of award categories and finalists.

The YWCA Women of Distinction Awards celebrates the finest female leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators and heroes in Edmonton.  The Women of Distinction Awards, first held in Edmonton in 1982, is an event that honours women who make major contributions to the culture and community of Edmonton. It is a chance to celebrate women who have done great things that might not have been recognized by the public. The YWCA Edmonton celebrates the 30th Annual Women of Distinction Awards May 31, 2012. The YWCA has made some exciting new changes and additions to the event to mark this 30 year milsteone. The event format has been streamlined to reflect the busy lives of our nominees and supporters, with a condensed presentation format and stronger focus on the nominees in each category.

Alberta Magazines Nominated for 2011 National Magazine Awards

National Magazine Awards, Alberta nomineesThe National Magazine Awards Foundation has released their 2011 shortlist of 362 nominees in 45 categories from 81 different Canadian magazines. Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awards will be announced at the 35th National Magazine Awards on June 7 in Toronto. Alberta based nominees include: Eighteen Bridges (recipient of an Alberta Magazine Award for Best New Magazine) with an impressive ten nominations and Omar Mouallem’s “Under the Veil,” recent winner of our Best Alberta Story award. AlbertaViews and Swerve are also strong contenders, for awards in categories ranging from Essays and Investigative Reporting to Humour and Society. A new Alberta-based magazine, Uppercase, received a nomination for Art Direction for an Entire Issue.

Alberta Finalists of 2012 Western Magazine Awards, Winners to be Announced June 15, 2012

Western Magazine Awards 2012The Western Magazine Awards, celebrating their 30th year with 30 awards, have released a list of finalists and the Alberta talent certainly does shine. Shortlisted for the Alberta/NWT Gold Award Best Article is David Ebner’s “Oil Sands For Sale” in Alberta Views; Chris Turner’s “Bearing Witness”, Omar Mouallem’s “Under the Veil”, and Tim Bowling’s “On the Rails” in Eighteen Bridges; and Jeremy Klaszus’ “For the Love of God” in Swerve.  The Alberta/NWT Magazine of the Year are nominess are Alberta Venture, celebrating their 15th year; Eighteen Bridges, 2011 recipient of the Alberta Magazine Award for Best New Magazine; and Swerve, the most recent addition to the AMPA member family. Three of the four magazines up for Best New Magazine are also Alberta-based publications: Eighteen Bridges, HERS and Leap.
