Deepa Mehta’s “Midnight’s Children” Featured at The Calgary International Film Festival’s Opening Night Red Carpet Gala on September 20, 2012

Calgary International Film FestivalThe Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) announced that Midnight’s Children directed by Deepa Mehta, and based on the Booker Prize winning novel by Salman Rushdie, will be featured at CIFF’s Red Carpet Opening Night Gala. CIFF also announced new partnerships with Telefilm Canada, the Canada Media Fund (CMF), Alberta Film and Enbridge for the opening night event. CIFF launches its 2012 festival with a Red Carpet Opening Night Gala on Thursday, September 20th at Calgary’s Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium that will be hosted by Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk.  The festival will continue over an 11-day period where 150 multi-genre films will be screened.

EIFF Showcases Films From ‘Our Own Backyard’… a full day of films produced by Albertans Sunday, September 30, 2012

Edmonton International Film FestivalThe Edmonton International Film Festival received one hundred and ten (110) films – compared with 82 in 2011 – created by Alberta filmmakers for programming teams to consider screening at the upcoming EIFF. That’s forty-eight (48) hours of indigenous movie-making! To honor, and celebrate, the work produced by Albertans, EIFF has programmed a full-day screening comprised of a selection of these films to screen on Sunday, September 30th, during the Edmonton International Film Festival! This date is also part of Alberta Culture Days (Sept. 28 to 30).

Alberta Film > “Grace” by Alberta Filmmaker Meagan Kelly and 2012 YWCA Woman of Distinction Nominee

Grace by Edmonton Filmmaker Meagan KellyMary-Grace’s struggle to escape poverty through education is the subject of a 23 minute documentary called “Grace” directed by Meagan Kelly, an Edmonton-based filmmaker and journalist, and now the Founder of The Gift of Grace Foundation.  The film has gone on to be appear in nine film festivals worldwide. Grace has also won two awards: Best Short Documentary at the Monaco Charity Film Festival and Best Short Feature-Children’s Advocacy at the 8th Artivist Film Festival. Grace was an official selection for the 2011 Edindocs festival in Scotland, the United Nations Association Film Festival in San Francisco, and COMMFFEST Global Community Film Festival in Toronto, Brief Encounters International Film Festival,  DOCUFEST Atlanta, St.John’s International Women’s Festival, and the Global Visions Film Festival in Edmonton this part March.

Starring Jeff Schwarz — owner of one of the biggest liquidation houses west of the Rockies — the series delves into the high-stakes world of buying and selling and introduces viewers to the unique life of haggler, trader and owner of Vancouver’s largest liquidation store, Jeff Schwarz. When it comes to moving discarded merchandise, Schwarz has done it all. Setting his sights on the big-time deal, he’s trading up to become the “Liquidation King,” living out his mission of buying low, selling high, and keeping the merchandise moving. Each 13-part, 30-minute episode shows a day in the life of Schwarz – from getting the tip and checking out the goods, to making the deal, finding a buyer, and watching the dollar signs soar or sink.

AMPIA (Alberta Media Production Industries Association) Announces 2012 Rosie Award Winners

Alberta Media Production Industries AssociationThe 38th Annual Alberta Film and Television Awards (the Rosies) were handed out in Calgary on Saturday, May 11 – and what a show it was! Among the many highlights was Premier Alison Redford’s presentation of the AMPIA Award of Distinction to former Premier Peter Lougheed and his wife Jeanne. The other special award of the night was the Friend of the Industry Award, presented to Paul Roscorla and Paul Bronfman of William F. White . Other memorable moments included musical performances by Russell Broom and Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, as well as Andrea Menard’s beautiful tribute to those in our industry who have passed on in the last year.
