Alberta Book & Literary Award Winners Announced at a Gala on May 25 in Edmonton

Alberta Literary AwardsThe Writers’ Guild of Alberta (WGA) and the Book Publishers Association of Alberta (BPAA) announced the winners of the 2013 Alberta Book Publishing Awards, and the Alberta Literary Awards on Saturday night.  Just over 250 people attended the 2013 Alberta Book Awards Gala, a joint celebration that celebrated excellence and innovation in Alberta writing and book publishing.  CBC’s Shelagh Rogers gave an entertaining keynote address, and many authors and publishers were celebrated for their achievements during the past year. Honorable Mayor Stephen Mandel was among the attendees, and Edmonton’s own Todd Babiak served as the intrepid emcee for the evening.

Edmonton Arts Council: Poet Laureate – Call For Nominations until May 29, 2013

Poet LaureateEdmonton Public Library, the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Arts Council have put out the call for Edmonton’s fifth Poet Laureate. Edmonton’s Poet Laureate reflects the life of the city through readings of poetry, and, as an ambassador for the literary arts, the Laureate incorporates poetry into a range of official and informal city activities. Edmonton’s current Poet Laureate is Anna Marie Sewell. Anna Marie is an established poet who has been actively involved in the city’s poetry scene for more than 20 years, earning respect and acclaim from her colleagues and peers around the literary world.

Nora GouldNora Gould, author of I see my love more clearly from a distance (Brick Books), received the 2013 Robert Kroetch City of Edmonton Book Prize.Presented annually at the Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts, this award is carried out through a partnership between The City of Edmonton and the Writers Guild ofAlberta. The $10,000 award, is sponsored by Audrey’s Books and the Edmonton Arts Council. The award was presented on April 29, 2013 at the Mayors Celebration of the Arts in Edmonton

Building a LegacyThe City of Edmonton’s Sustainable Development, Urban Design Section invites you to join them on May 15, 2013 in celebrating the launch of Edmonton’s first book dedicated to our local architectural heritage: Building A Legacy: Edmonton’s Architectural History, Written by Ken Tingley / Photos by Lawrence Herzog. The book details the City of Edmonton that sprang up in a few short decades on the beautiful banks of the North Saskatchewan River valley. Recurring cycles of boom and bust shaped the Alberta capital into the vibrant, but historically rich, city it is today.
