Submissions Invited for the 2015 Alberta Literary Awards until December 31, 2015

Alberta Literary AwardsThe Writers’ Guild of Alberta is preparing to celebrate another successful year with the 2015 Alberta Literary Awards.  Writers from across Alberta and their publishers are invited to check out and submit to this year’s award categories. The deadline for submissions to the Alberta Literary Awards is December 31, 2014. Submissions are evaluated on originality, creativity, and quality of writing, as well as appropriate fit within a category.  The winners will be announced at the 2015 Alberta Literary Awards Gala in Edmonton in the spring  in conjunction with the 2015 Words in 3 Dimensions Conference (www.wordsin3d.com).

Alberta Book: Marion Nicholl: Science and Alchemy by University of Calgary Press

Marion Nicholl“This is a sumptuously produced work and an ideal specimen of the book as artefact, writes Anne Burke in her review of the book for the League of Canadian Poets. “This study of Nicoll’s range of expression will offer meaningful commentary, historical and aesthetic contexts, and a feminist approach to male mentorship.” The book’s three contributors point out, as the first female permanent instructor at the now Alberta College of Art, the classically  trained, multi-talented and well qualified Nicholl was confined to teaching craft, printmaking and design at the ACA for 30 years. Yet, it is her paintings that are now most often found in public collections.

Alberta Media Personality: Jim Zang – A Publisher with Passion for Publishing and Good Luck

Jim-Zang-2014Jim Zang, Associate Publisher at Calgary-based Source Media Group, considers himself a lucky man. His luck started right out of university when his sociology degree couldn’t attract a job. Jim then enrolled in the Public Relations Diploma program at Mount Royal College. Several courses in journalism that first year and a savvy instructor identified Jim’s passion and talent for writing. In 1986 he landed his first job with Panorama Industrial Communications – a one-man PR and communications firm.

2014-Alberta-Literary-AwardsThe Writers’ Guild of Alberta announced the winners of the 201 4 Alberta Literary Awards in Calgary on June 6, 2013 in conjunction with the Book Publishers Association of Alberta’s Alberta Book Publishing Awards and the Edmonton Public Library’s Alberta Readers Choice Award. More than 200 writers attended the 2014 Alberta Book Awards Gala, part of The Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s 2014 Calgary Conference, “ After the Flood, Alberta Writers Unite One Year Later. ”

Edmonton’s Curtis Gillespie Ties the Record With 4 Wins at the National Magazine Awards Announced on June 6, 2014

National Magazine AwardsThe National Magazine Awards were presented at a gala event on June 6, 2014 in Toronto with Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awarded in 47 written, visual, integrated and special categories. The success of Curtis Gillespie, Edmonton-based writer and editor of Eighteen Bridges magazine, was a highlight of the evening, as the recipient of a record-tying four National Magazine Awards, including both Gold and Silver in the Essays.
