Shaw and Cisco Plan an Extensive WiFi Network in Western Canada for 2012
Shaw and Cisco announced announced an agreement this past September to deploy an extensive and advanced wifi network in Western Canada. The broadband wireless network will be available to Shaw customers. The network will allow Shaw customers to connect Wi-Fi enabled devices like tablets, mobile phones and computers to thousands of wifi access points in Shaw’s communities. Data usage and the demand for connectivity continue to increase: according to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index Forecast , there will be nearly 15 billion network connections by 2015. Read more 
Shaw lays off 500 employees, 140 of them in Calgary
(Calgary Herald, March 24, 2011) Shaw Communications has cut 500 jobs across the country, including 140 in its Calgary operations, as part of a reorganization its president says will make the company more efficient and nimble. Following a six-week review, Shaw Communications — which now has a hand in cable, Internet, home phones, television stations and, starting next year, cell phones — has laid off almost four per cent of its 13,000-person staff.
Shaw Sports Channel Among Speciality Channel Applications
Shaw Media (owners of Shaw Cable, Global TV etc.) have applied to the CRTC to launch their own mainstream sports channel Shaw Media Sports. Shaw is just the latest media giant to apply to the CRTC for this since the CRTC rules that sports channels could now compete with the first (and for the longest time protected) mainstream sports channel, TSN. Shaw Media Launches Online Video on Demand Service
Shaw Direct has launched its new online Video On Demand (VOD) library, accessible anywhere in Canada. The site offers on demand video downloads for computer viewing. The service is offered to Shaw Direct customers. It’s positioned as just the first offering from Shaw Direct, as its VOD technology will be used in more methods of content delivery, including VOD capabilities through most advanced digital receivers in the near future.
