TEC Edmonton Venture Prize 2012 Awards with Interesting Companions at the Media Table

Mack Male aka Mastermaq

Mack Male aka mastermag.ca

I had the good fortune to sit with Mack Male (aka Mastermaq), Graham Hicks and Cheryl Croucher at the media table at the TEC Edmonton Venture Prize Gala last night. Both Graham and Cheryl hired me in the past for private training on blogging and social media, intensive sessions I won’t soon forget. You know what they say about how keen adult learners are, once they set their mind to it. They both set a high water mark. Mack is a blogger extraordinaire and an around enthusiast/promoter of all things Edmonton, especially at the municipal political level. He shares many of my interests, attends every major event in Edmonton and posts photos and writes about these events on his blog. I was at the TEC Edmonton Venture Prize event to support the finalists for the awards who had participated in the “Pitch Your Story to the Media” workshop I’ve been contracted to provide to the nominees by TEC Edmonton for the past four years. Alberta Film > “One Problem” by Calgary Filmmaker Documents Underwear Delivery to Homeless Shelters Across Canada

Nur Films CalgaryIn the summer of 2009, Calgary film-maker Ramin Eshraghi-Yazdi, 32, and medical engineer Brent King, 42, loaded an RV full of men’s underwear to be delivered to homeless shelters across Canada. Eleven days and 10 cities later, they had delivered more than 25,000 pairs of tighty-whities to shelters across Canada and they documented the trip in the short film “One Problem.” “One Problem” is a survey of the Canadian homeless community through the lens of an eleven day cross Canada underwear drive. Yazdi and King had three simple goals in mind; to deliver a small luxury to as many people as possible, create some media excitement to bring attention to the issue, and learn as much as possible about homelessness in Canada, Brent acts as a guide through a sensitive and touching journey into the issues of some of Canada’s forgotten citizens. Dare We Hope for Another Cultural Renaissance in Alberta Under Alison Redford and the PCs?

Alberta's Camelot: Culture & The Arts in the Lougheed YearsMuch as I admire Graham Hicks, it’s not often our politics align. His article “Wildrose bad for E-Town” in today’s Edmonton Sun, made me stop and think and, dare I say, hope. I agree with his argument that,  “a change of government, any change, after 40 years is attractive. Away with the PC’s arrogance, entitlement and intimidation.”  I couldn’t express my thoughts better. I also agree with him that: “The most practical course for Edmontonians to save our jobs, to prevent corporate pullouts to Calgary, to not be second class citizens in our own province, is to hold our nose and vote Conservative.” Hicks points out that in the past, whenever governing parties had a strong majority, typically Edmonton got the “shaft”. And he offers convincing evidence of this consequence many times in Alberta’s recent past. Read more »
