Magazines in Alberta
There are more than 135 magazines published in Alberta. Most are independently published and focus on a small but popular niche e.g. Canadian Scrapbooker, Canine Review, Canadian Emergency News. Calgary based RedPoint Media Group is Alberta’s largest publisher of lifestyle magazines in Alberta. They produce 13 consumer and corporate including Avenue Calgary and Avenue Edmonton, up! Magazine, WestJet’s in-flight magazine, the internationally acclaimed Wine Access Magazine, West Magazine on behalf of the Western Financial Group and they are the official publisher of some of the most important and influential arts and culture publications in Calgary for Alberta Ballet, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Calgary Opera and Broadway Across Canada. RedPoint Media Group was named one of Alberta’s Top 50 Employers in 2011 for the third year in a row. Edmonton based Venture Publishing is Alberta’s largest publisher of business magazines and publications. They publish Venture Magazine and since 2008 Alberta Oil along with unlimited magazine, which launched in print but was soon converted to exclusively online, the Commerce News on behalf of the Edmonton’s Chamber of Commerce, Signature Magazine on behalf of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and a number of specialty and custom publications. Vancouver based Glacier Media Group, through June Warren Nickles Energy Group, its Calgary based division they purchased in 2008, publishes six magazines in Alberta, five focused on the oil and gas sector and one on the construction sector. Oilweek, their flagship publication has been published in Alberta for over 60 years. Toronto based Trader Corporation (now a division of Yellow Pages) publishes 10 magazines in Calgary and Edmonton, including the New Condo Guide, New Home Guide, Renters Guide, and Home Decor and Renovations Guide and a number of popular bargain finder newspapers. Calgary-based Source Media Group also publishes magazines primarily focused on real estate. Recently they expanded their editorial lineup to include city/lifestyle magazines with Red Deer Living and Okotoks Living in 2010. They have another city/lifestyle magazine scheduled for publication in 2011 with Leduc Living. All the multi-magazine publishers in Alberta also offer custom publishing options.
