Campus Radio Stations in Alberta

Campus radio stations typically are happy to broadcast news and public service announcements appropriate to their audiences, a golden opportunity often overlooked by publicists and media relations practitioners. And, if you come up with a creative project suitable for future broadcasters, technicians and camera crews to cut their teeth on, they might even record your news or public service announcement for you and broadcast it as well.

CJSW – University of Calgary

CJSW-FM is a campus radio station, broadcasting at 90.9 FM, from the University of Calgary in Alberta. CJSW is a member of the National Campus and Community Radio Association and the University of Calgary Tri-Media Alliance in partnership with NUTV (the campus television station) and The Gauntlet (the campus newspaper). The station is run by a small group of paid staff and more than 200 campus and community volunteers. In addition to the FM broadcast, the station can be heard at 106.9 cable FM, and via Ogg Vorbis stream from its web site. Select shows are also available for podcast download.

CJSR – University of Edmonton

CJSR-FM is a campus-based community radio station, broadcasting at 88.5 FM in Edmonton, Alberta. The CJSR studios are located in the Students’ Union Building of the University of Alberta. CJSR is a volunteer-run campus and community radio station with a stated mission “to enlighten and entertain our audience through high quality and diverse programming that constantly challenges the status quo.” CJSR plays a diverse range of music and spoken-word programming. It is subject to the CRTC’s requirements for community-based campus stations which means, among other things, that 25% of its programming must be spoken-word programming, no more than 10% of the music it broadcasts can be “hit” music, and 35% of the music it broadcasts must be “Canadian content”. CJSR runs on 900 watts, broadcasting throughout Edmonton, Alberta and the surrounding area, and, since 2000, via streaming audio over the internet.

CKXU- University of Lethbridge

CKXU-FM is a campus based radio station, broadcasting at 88.3 FM, from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta. CKXU began as CKUL in 1972, when a public address system was set up in University Hall to broadcast musical content inside the building from mid-morning to early afternoon. The CKUL Radio Society was incorporated in October 1977, and a year later the CRTC granted the society a licence to broadcast at 530 AM. Although the station began broadcasting on cable FM in 1988, a switch to FM was considered ideal. In 2004, the CRTC approved the application to operate a new English-language community-based campus FM radio station. CKUL’s call letters were changed to CKXU, and in 2004, the station began to broadcast at 88.3 FM to the city of Lethbridge and the surrounding area. CKXU 88.3 FM now broadcasts for more than 126 hours per week, year-round, with a volunteer core of over 100 members.

NR92 – Northern Alberta Institute of Technology

NR92 NAIT Radio is a campus based radio station broadcasting on 92.3 FM from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta. The station can be heard full-time in the NAIT South lobby, outside the NAITSA office, Tower lounge, and in the RTA wing. The main way to listen to NR92 off campus is via the Internet, and it’s 24/7. NR92 is a training/learning facility for radio students. It’s run like most radio stations with the same dedication to quality and performance. News and sports every half hour, remotes and roving reports keep listeners in touch with what’s going on around NAIT. The station offers the students of NAIT their own voice in covering NAITSA events, sports activities, play commercials about NAIT services, and cater to the students tastes in music and humor. They are always looking for ways to improve and stay in touch with today’s student. NR92 takes feedback at 471-8833. NR92 is the place to listen for alternative student programming.
