TV Stations in Alberta

There are 23 television stations in Alberta. They are operated by six major networks and systems – the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Crossroads Television System (CTS), CTV Television Network (CTV), Global Television Network and OMNI TV. In addition, Shaw Media operates the Citytv stations in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Red Deer. These networks and systems (with the exception of the independent Christian system CTS) are owned by corporations that are dominant players in the national media market – BCE (soon to be Bell Media), the CBC, Rogers and Shaw.

There are more than 135 magazines published in Alberta. Most are independently published and focus on a small but popular niche e.g. Canadian Scrapbooker, Canine Review, Canadian Emergency News. Calgary based RedPoint Media Group is Alberta’s largest publisher of lifestyle magazines in Alberta. They produce 13 consumer and corporate including Avenue Calgary and Avenue Edmonton, up! Magazine, WestJet’s in-flight magazine, the internationally acclaimed Wine Access Magazine.

Radio Stations in Alberta

There are more than 150 radio stations in Alberta. Nova Scotia based Newcap Radio is Alberta’s largest radio broadcaster with 33 stations in Alberta and 76 stations across Canada. Montreal based Astral Media is Canada’s largest radio broadcaster with 83 radio stations in Canada,  including 8 stations in Alberta and, like their closest competitors, Corus/Shaw Media, CTVglobemedia and Rogers, is a major player in premium and specialty television in Canada.

Newspapers in Alberta

There are 14 daily newspapers published in Alberta, not including the two national dailies, The Globe and Mail and the National Post. Toronto based Postmedia Network is the largest publisher daily newspapers in Canada, including the two largest dailies Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal and the national daily, National Post. Sun Media/Quebecor is the largest publisher of daily newspapers in Alberta with the Calgary Sun, Edmonton Sun, Grande Prairie Herald Tribune, and Fort McMurray Today as well as 24 Hours, the weekday commuter papers Sun Media publishes in Calgary and Edmonton.

AMPIA (Alberta Media Production Industries Association) Announces 2012 Rosie Award Winners

Alberta Media Production Industries AssociationThe 38th Annual Alberta Film and Television Awards (the Rosies) were handed out in Calgary on Saturday, May 11 – and what a show it was! Among the many highlights was Premier Alison Redford’s presentation of the AMPIA Award of Distinction to former Premier Peter Lougheed and his wife Jeanne. The other special award of the night was the Friend of the Industry Award, presented to Paul Roscorla and Paul Bronfman of William F. White . Other memorable moments included musical performances by Russell Broom and Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, as well as Andrea Menard’s beautiful tribute to those in our industry who have passed on in the last year. Weekly Newspapers in Alberta Award Winners Announced by Newspapers Canada

Edmonton JournalThis week the St. Albert Gazette was named the best all-round newspaper in its circulation class (12,500-24,999) by Newspapers Canada. It is third time in four years the Gazette has been so honoured by the group that is a joint initiative of the Canadian Newspaper Association and the Canadian Community Newspapers Association. “Based on the copies I read, the news staff at the Gazette is the most aggressive in this circulation category,” said judge Glen Mazza. “This newspaper is bursting with local news, features and events listings. News/sports briefs give the readers a glimpse of many events that don’t need in-depth coverage.” Mazza went on to say “a great effort is made to get spot news photos. Well thought-out headlines and leads were among the best in class. It is a nicely-designed paper and offers readers a compelling visual package. “Opinion writing mainly focused on local issues – we can read dailies for the national stuff.” Read more »

2nd Annual Edmonton Music Award Winners Announced on April 28, 2012

Edmonton Music AwardsThe second annual Edmonton Music Awards were handed out on Saturday, April 28 at the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton. Tupelo Honey was nominated for six awards and won for Album of the Year and Rock Album of the Year. The Joe’s Float of Flail won Rap/Hip Hop Album of The Year, Manuela’s The Golden Story EP was named R&B/Soul Album of the Year, while 100 Mile House’s Hollow Ponds earned Roots/Folk Album of the Year. Two honours were decided by online votes — Shelbi, an up ’n’ coming rock group, picked up Artist To Watch, while Killinger, a hard rock act, won the People’s Choice Award. Read more »
