On March 4, 2016 in Calgary the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association presented the Alberta Magazine Awards to an audience of writers, editors, art directors, publishers and other magazine lovers, including Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who punctuated his keynote address by thanking all for “telling our stories.” New Trail, the alumni magazine of the University of Alberta, took home 6 gold awards including the biggest prize, Magazine of the Year. New Trail has been nominated for 7 National Magazine Awards since 2012 and won Best Art Direction of a Single Article at last year’s NMAs.
New Trail also won 2016 AMPA gold awards for Illustration, Art Direction of a Single Issue, Editorial Package, Feature Design, and Best Cover–all for their “Future of Everything” issue which clearly blew away the awards judges. The art direction is by Marcey Andrews, also a National Magazine Award winner, and the illustrations are by NMA winner Raymond Biesinger and Gwen Keraval.
