Community Newspaper Awards 2015On March 30, the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards were handed out in celebration of the very best in community publishing from across Canada. Alberta weeklies took home numerous awards, some many: the Rocky Mountain Outlook and the St Albert Gazette tied for winning the most – six each. The 2015 competition saw 264 publications from coast to coast submit over 2,700 entries representing their best work from 2014.

For these awards, newspapers compete against other newspapers in similar circulation classes and are judged by a panel of industry experts. This annual awards program features over 30 unique categories honouring outstanding editorial, photography, multimedia and overall excellence in community newspaper publishing.

It’s interesting to note that Calgary’s FastForward Weekly announced it had ceased publishing on March 5 and yet won in two categories: 2nd place in Class 1016 – General Excellence, Circulation 6,500 to 12,499 – Best Overall Newspaper and 2nd place in Class 3012 – Best Environment Writing, Circulation 10,000 and over.

This year awards were handed out for the first time for excellence in campus newspapers. Calgary’s Southern Institute of Technology (SAIT Polytechnic) took 2nd place for Best Campus News Story and 1st for Best Campus Photography.
