On December 27, 2013, CKEA emerged with its third branding since its launch in 2010, this time as 95.7 CRUZ FM with an Adult Hits playlist. Launched by Harvard Broadcasting in 2010 as The Sound, rebranded on March 8, 2011 as Lite 95.7, the radio station is cruising for a market, and not just in Edmonton.
In Fort McMurray CRUZ FM is also in search of a market. Instead of rebranding one of their own stations to the CRUZ as they had in Edmonton, Harvard purchased 100.5 K-Rock from Newcap Broadcasting in November 2013. They rebranded and relaunched the station as The CRUZ “Fort Mac’s Greatest Hits” on December 26, 2013, the day before they launched the CRUZ brand in Edmonton at 95.7 FM.
The first CRUZ station Harvard launched was also the result of a rebrand. CFWD was launched on April 8, 2008 as Wired 96.3 playing a contemporary hit playlist. On December 26, 2012, it was rebranded to 93.3 CRUZ FM with a playlist of “Rock, Classic Rock, Pop and New Wave Hits from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s.”
Although it shares the same branding as its two sister stations in Fort McMurray and Saskatoon, according to their marketing director, CRUZ Edmonton’s playlist has variations.
Our rebrand to CRUZ FM we classify as Adult Hits. The Classic Rock format can be used to describe CRUZ as we do play some Classic Rock songs but our playlist is much more than just Classic Rock. We play hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s and some from the 2000s. Another way to describe our Adult Hits format would be Classic Hits, as the majority of the songs that we play are classic, proven hit songs…. There are slight variations between the CRUZ brand in Edmonton compared to our other markets.
Tim Schutz, their program director describes CRUZ Edmonton’s playlist more specifically:
…95.7 CRUZ FM is an Adult Hits radio station in Edmonton that caters to Adults 25-54 (52% to 48% Male to Female split) which celebrates the music we grew up on from artists like Queen, The Eagles, Bryan Adams, The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top and David Bowie, with nice surprises from Neil Diamond, Milli Vanilli, Bay City Rollers and Black Eyed Peas.
They guarantee never to play the same song twice in a 24 hour period from Midnight to 11:59pm. It’s their $10,000 No Repeat All Day Guarantee. If they mess up, “one lucky listener will win $10,000.”
When asked about the variations Sarah reported in CRUZ Edmonton’s playlist compared to its CRUZ-branded sister stations, Tim pointed to their new program Sunday Night CRUZ Blues.
CRUZ also is a big fan of the Blues and every Sunday from 5pm to Midnight, we will soon present Sunday Night CRUZ Blues and feature great blues artists like Eric Clapton, George Thorogood, Etta James and Stevie Ray Vaughn, just to name a few.
And to their morning show hosts:
We have an entertaining, refreshing Morning Show that’ll make you feel young again with McCord and Bradley from 6-10am. Shirley McQueen is on from 10a-3p and former JOE FM Morning Man, Gary James hosts the Afternoon Drive show from 3-7pm. Claire Spencer is our weekend host.
Tim also mentioned their intention to bring back hall parties in Edmonton starting on April 4 at the Polish Hall. CRUZ FM will present Trooper and the only way to win tickets is through the radio station.
If you’re looking for a radio station in Edmonton that plays Adult Hits and “Great music. All the Time” and, unlike their other two CRUZ sister stations, with a blues orientation of the Adult Hits format, at least on Sunday nights, then CRUZ Edmonton is looking for you. Considering that they have already announced the CRUZ BLUES program and not yet a host: are they looking for or have they already found one they have yet to announce? Stay tuned.
