As part of their Free Lucy Campaign, the Edmonton-based Voices for Animals Society will present the HBO documentary special An Apology to Elephants, narrated and produced by Emmy Award winner Lily Tomlin. They will also be showing a brief segment of the CBC fifth estate documentary The Elephant in the Room, a documentary that focuses attention on Lucy, the lone elephant at Edmonton’s Valley Zoo. Admission is free.
The Elephant in the Room also outlines the reasons the zoo has given for their failure to move her to a sanctuary where she will have the opportunity to thrive and to finally enjoy the company of her own species.
The event’s guest speaker, Patrick Lampi, is the Executive Director of the Alaska Zoo whose lone elephant Maggie was successfully moved in 2007 to the PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society) sanctuary in California, where she is thriving and enjoying life among other elephants. Candidates for the upcoming municipal election have also been invited to this event.
