Saturday Night Live star Tim Meadows headlines the 3rd annual Edmonton Comedy Festival from October 16 to 19. According to Andrew Grose, the festival producer (who also co-host of the new Tencer and Grose show from 9 to noon on 630 CHED), this year’s lineup closely resembles the lineup of the festival’s inaugural year.
It was more like Club Med the first year, it was a bunch of guys getting together who hadn’t seen each other in years,” says Grose, who is an on-stage comic veteran of over 20 years. “We’re all really close friends, but we love working with each other.
This year’s festival will run at the Paramount Theatre in the hopes it will deliver a more genuine comedy-like environment for both the comedians and the audience.
There’s nothing wrong with the Citadel, but when an audience comes to a beautiful theatre like the Citadel, they act a little differently than they would if they were at a bar or something,” says Grose. “I walked into the Paramount and took one look at the theatre and thought ‘this is our home’.
The festival will also be expanding northwest to include the Yellowhead Casino.
We want this festival to eventually be something that encompasses all of Edmonton, St. Albert, Spruce Grove and Sherwood Park, we just don’t want to go too fast,” says Grose.
Two gala performances, Friday night’s Date Night with The Ladies Man, and Saturday night’s Comedy Unleashed with Sean Cullen, will feature eight comedians taking the stage.
New to this year’s festival is the Master Series, where fans can see comedians perform full 45-minute headline sets. Also new to this year’s festival will be a host of free workshops ranging from stand-up comedy to improv comedy.
Returning this year is the Young Guns competition, where 27 local amateur comedians will battle it out to be crowned the 2013 Young Guns champion. The winner gets $1,000, an iPad and an opening spot on a professional show. The Young Guns portion begins on Sept. 25 at The Ranch.
