Russell been a broadcast journalist for nearly 25 years from St. John’s, NL to Prince Rupert, BC. His work has been featured locally, regionally, and nationally on programs like The Current, Definitely Not the Opera, As It Happens and The Sunday Edition. He’s had a variety of assignments from breaking news to award-nominated documentaries.
In his career, he’s racked up nearly 10,000 interviews with news makers, politicians and artists from one end of Canada to the other, and beyond.
Outside of his current affairs and arts news duties, he’s produced several music albums including All For A Song and The Very Best of Harry Hibbs for CBC Records. The Hibbs compilation is the biggest selling CD in the history of the label and won Russell a “Heritage Recording of the Year” award from the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland & Labrador.
Since 1994, Russell has spent time writing and performing for the theatrical stage with several theatre companies and comedy troupes. In 2002, he won a “Best Supporting Actor” award for his role in Yazmena Reza’s ART. He continues to perform occasionally with Calgary’s Dirty Laundry and is one of Calgary’s most sought-after Hosts and MC’s.
A noted columnist and print reporter, his written work has appeared in a variety of magazines including The Chart, The Newfoundland Herald and NorthWord. Russell has organized benefit events for the Red Cross, helping to raise nearly half a million dollars. He continues to volunteer his time with groups like CARAS, the ECMA and Wordfest.
