Ziyah Karmali, EdmontonZiyah Karmali is an actress, model, reporter, athlete and fundraiser. She is also fully bilingual, academically accomplished and multi-talented. After graduating with her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Alberta in 2009 and completing her practicum, Ziyah signed a one-year contract to teach French immersion to a grade five class in Spruce Grove.
Because of her outstanding academic achievements, Ziyah received a full scholarship to pursue her Master’s in Education, which she plans to complete sometime in the next two years.

Keenly interested in journalism, Ziyah co-hosts Bollywood News weekly on the Asian Television Network, contributes to Shave Magazine, writes a weekly column for the Edmonton Examiner and recently expanded her journalist pursuits as the entertainment reporter for Breakfast TV in Edmonton.

Ziyah, who is born and raised in Edmonton, is as passionate about journalism and teaching as she is about volunteering and community development. She has volunteered at Goodwill and as a computer camp counsellor. She and her mom have participated in the Mother Daughter Walk for the Heart and Stroke Foundation for many years. She has a 13 year old sister now in grade 8 for whom she no doubt serves as a positive role model.

Ziyah spear-headed a fundraiser with Mayor Stephen Mandel, former Oiler Georges Laraque and the Edmonton Eskimos that raised over $6,000 for the Variety Children’s Charity. She is an ambassador for the Ronald McDonald House and heads up their “Home for Dinner” program. She is also an accredited Zumba instructor. Her last Zumbathon raised funds for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving Program).

Ziyah likes to model, an interest that started when friends nominated her for Miss Edmonton Indy in 2008 — which she won – and then crowned Miss Edmonton 2010.

When I asked her what she hoped to accomplish over the next few years, she didn’t miss a beat.

I want my own tv show. I admire Oprah Winfrey, what she has accomplished and what she has contributed to the world. For me it’s either dream big or go home.

Ziyah sings, dances, acts and she plays soccer, hockey (as a goalie and the MVP for the league can you believe?) and the piano—Royal Conservatory of Music level 7.  She’s definitely a smart, ambitious, well-rounded, educated and a super busy person!
