Rockie Awards2012 Banff AlbertaHosted by Canadian actress, Lisa Rey, the Rockies recognized winners in 26 distinct categories, with grand prizes awarded in the genres of Documentary, Drama, Kids and Animation, Interactive and Entertainment. The Grand Jury Prize, the highest honor of the Rockies Program Competition, was awarded to “Koran by Heart” which is an HBO Documentary produced by Passion Pictures and Motto Pictures. Other highlights from the Gala included previously announced award winners taking the stage to accept their official RCMP Mounties. Chuck Lorre was awarded the Paul Ustinov Award for Comedy, Jeanne Beker the Canadian Award of Distinction, and Google the Award of Excellence in Innovation.

Now in its 33rd year, the Rockies is the largest international program competition in the content industry, attracting upwards of one-thousand entries from over 30 countries around the world. The Rockies annual ceremony, hosted by Shaw Media, serves as a reflection of the latest trends in international programming within the current traditional, cross-platform and digital entertainment genres.

This documentary from Germany’s Konstanze Burkard recounts a cultural exchange trip to the USSR made by American jazz musician Benny Goodman and his orchestra back in 1962. In the space of a few weeks, there were 30 concerts in six cities, that were seen by 176,800 people.

110 kids from the Islamic world are chosen and arrive in Cairo for the world’s oldest Koran reciting contest. Koran by Heart follows two boys from Senegal and Tajikistan, and a little girl from Maldives – who go head-to-head with kids nearly twice their age in the pronunciation, recitation and perfected memorization of the Qur’an. Even as their own future hangs in the balance, they are caught between fundamentalist and moderate visions of Islam.
