The Saint City News will close its doors later this month, it was announced last week. The Saint City News’s parent company, Great West Newspapers, made the official announcement to staff on Friday, June 10. The last edition of the newspaper will be published on Friday, June 24. Great West emphasized that this was a business decision and that significant overhead costs, particularly those associated with distributing the paper, were a major factor in determining that the operation was no longer financially viable. Some staff members have been offered other positions within the Great West chain, while others will be laid off and receive severance packages. The Saint City News has operated under that name since January 1998. Prior to that, it was known as both the St. Albert This Week and the St. Albert Booster. Great West, which owns 20 other newspapers throughout Alberta, purchased the Saint City News in October 2010. Before that, it was owned by Glacier Media, based out of British Columbia, who bought the paper from JuneWarren Publishing Ltd. in 2005.
