New Tribe is a monthly magazine published in Calgary since February 2010 by the Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth and distributed throughout the city and surrounding communities. The goal of New Tribe is to be the voice of urban Aboriginal youth from twelve to twenty nine and beyond. Their mission is to promote a positive outlook on Aboriginal living in an urban setting by promoting and sharing information within the community. New Tribe aims to provide Aboriginal youth with stories of inspiration, and invite them to share their own stories and get involved in the community. Youth are encouraged to contribute to the magazine, whether it be artwork, fiction, poetry or journalism. Each month they profile a youth who has made a difference and is taking steps towards achieving their goals. They also regularly feature “Cool Jobs” and profile people in different industries with interesting careers to give youth a closer look at opportunities available to them.
Up to 5,000 copies of New Tribe are printed monthly and distributed at public locations and Aboriginal organizations around Calgary. They also have a mailing list for companies, organizations and individuals who wish to receive copies regularly. New Tribe has become a main source of information and entertainment not only for Aboriginal youth, but for the Aboriginal community of Calgary as well.
