Latitude 53 is pleased to welcome Edmonton artist, designer and illustrator Gabe Wong to the Main Space this May and June with his curated show Where Are We Going? as well as Daniel Evan’s very different explorations of home and place in Sanctuary. Wong draws on the same themes and some of the same Edmonton talent as his celebrated Where Are You From? poster show in 2009. With posters by a cross-section of Edmonton artists, the collection showcases a variety of takes on the question. As well as hanging on the gallery walls, the works in Where Are We Going? are collected in a new publication.
In the ProjEx Room, Daniel Evan’s Sanctuary takes up some of the same threads of place, identity and safety. Evans’ ghostly reconstruction of his childhood tree-house—built freestanding for lack of trees and later dismantled and stored for many years—is more than a question of nostalgia. Evans’ childhood narrative is closely tied with that of the builder, his Opa, escaping to Canada after the Indonesian War of Independence and searching for his own sanctuary.
Daniel Evans will give a talk about his work at the gallery on Thursday 9 June at 7:00 PM. Gabe Wong will give a curator’s talk to be announced. A full list of the artists featured in Where Are We Going is available on our website at www.latitude53.org.
