A Mill Woods school has produced Edmonton’s youngest news crew. Every morning at Minchau elementary school, students produce a 10-minute news show that streams live on Smart Boards in every classroom. Minchau Television — or MTV as they call it — is run entirely by students, and includes a sports reporter, a weatherman, station managers, and technical staff.
The students, in Grades 4 to 6, start preparing at 8 a.m. every weekday and go live when school starts at 8:35 a.m. The show informs students of the latest school news, often letting the principal or librarian drop in to make an important announcement. Anchors speak in front of a green screen in the news studio, while technical manager Noah Ergezinger, also in Grade 6, selects appropriate backgrounds on a computer.
